I've gotten woefully behind at reporting my dreams, but I couldn't let this one go unchronicled. This was night before last, and I couldn't have avoided the all-day political reporting even if I'd tried, so I'm sure the overdose was what caused this.
I was reading the National Geographic, which is one of my favorite real-life pastimes, and had gotten to the Letters to the Editor section. A woman was writing in about something they'd mentioned in an article or blurb that I had missed in a past issue. The missed article had apparently mentioned and quoted a man named Lewis, who had predicted that Sarah Palin would have a major political win in the future. The woman writing in was extremely excited about this, saying that she knew "the Lewises" in real life, that they were just wonderful people, and how had National Geographic gotten ahold of this "revelation" (!!??!!?? [punctuation marks taken from the letter]). Had National Geographic intercepted an e-mail from "Pastor Lewis"? This was wonderful news (!!!!). "Can you tell us more??!!??!!??"
Last night I returned to form with a tiring dream about group travel featuring an altercation with my sister after she told me that my underwear (when clean; this was all about the state of my overall stock of clean underwear) smelled bad. I think this may have been prompted by my realization the other day that it had been years and years since I've had any kind of disagreement with my sister and that it would seem very strange.
A few nights before that I had another dream in which I was traveling in India, first with my husband and then with my parents. The part with my husband followed our usual real-life pattern of him wanting to take things at a faster pace than I did ("yeah, this is nice, but we can't hang around too long or we'll miss such-and-such other place"). There were a lot of really neat aesthetic details in this dream.

rahm and his medium-size domestic animal
The backstory is very confused as to how I got there and why, but I dreamed that I was attending a fancy party in an extremely expensive French apartment. Picture high ceilings, historic details, fancy stuff all around in a rococo style. At one point I drew a curtain back and was embarrassed to realize that I had unveiled a sleeping area composed of a gigantic bed. The hostess (random dream hostess*) was very nice about it, though.
The table had been partially set already, and then there was some shuffling around and we had to switch our seating arrangement. For some reason I was really agitated by the fact that people were no longer sitting in front of their preferred drink (all were very G-rated beverages like milk and orange juice, although one of the guests bore an eerie resemblance to Karl Lagerfeld, and I thought I read somewhere that he subsisted on Coke Zero).
At one point I looked out the window to check on a mild commotion below and saw Rahm Emmanuel a couple of stories below in the courtyard. He was throwing something (a treat?) to a medium-size domestic animal who was perched on a ledge about 15 feet off the ground. Unfortunately I don't remember if the animal was a goat or pig, but whatever it was, Rahm started scaling the wall to reach it. I was impressed at his climbing ability, but wondered what had gotten him and the animal into this unusual situation.
*Although I'm pretty sure that the fancy apartment was influenced by a blog I was perusing the other day, the hostess was not the blog's writer, just a random subconscious invention.

Barack Obama, Fashionista
I dreamed that I was alternately watching on TV and present at a meeting of Barack Obama and his advisers. They were meeting with lobbyists from disadvantaged groups in education. There were two black women, a couple of white men, an Asian woman, and a rabbi (in the dream, I was pretty sure the rabbi was a woman dressed as a man). Each group of lobbyists was arguing for its own position, which was that the government needed to pay more attention to the disadvantaged group they were representing. Obama was sitting at the center of the table looking thoughtful as they argued.
The rabbi was talking about how disadvantaged Jewish kids are and managed to imply that s/he (the rabbi) *could* be racist against African Americans (i.e. Obama himself) if s/he wanted to, but that s/he should be commended because s/he wasn't going to play that way. I was certain that Obama was sharp enough to understand the implication in the rabbi's speech, but one of the white women at the meeting felt like she had to explain it, by spelling it out and hoping to shame the rabbi for making that implication.
Obama was gracious enough to just nod his head, but I could tell he was trying to figure out a way to get all these people to work together instead of just fighting each other. At that point, the camera (or my perspective) shifted under the table, where I discovered that Obama was wearing a pair of slip-on, black and white wingtip shoes (1940s zoot suit style) with bright pink, pointed toes.
I was just feeling impressed by his fashion-forward shoes when he called a break in the meeting because he wanted to visit his family. He went to see his children and the younger one hugged him and whispered something in his ear that triggered him to think of the solution to the problem of the meeting. She whispered, "The devil's in the details." He jumped up, elated that he had figured this out, and went back to the meeting.
As part of getting these warring factions to work together, he had them all get up to dance. They formed two long lines facing each other, kind of like 18th century European dances. Some of them were willing to go along, but some of the hardbitten politicians were clearly dubious that this could work. They were dancing very stiffly, doing a lot of eye-rolling. One very tall woman in particular was making it clear that she disapproved.
