about a week ago i watched "the business of being born" at a friend's request. i'm surprised it took a full week for my dreams to be influenced.
i was pregnant. there really wasn't any back story (like why i was pregnant, who the father was, etc). i was going in for a checkup at the hospital. my mother was with me. i went into labor. i was now in a wheelchair. i felt the contractions (this makes me wonder if i had gas last night? what was it that i was feeling?) i was then in an exam room (doctor office style) and waiting. The contractions kept coming closer. i knew it was time to have the baby, even though my mom was assuring me that i was overly optimistic and that there's no way it was going to be that quick. but i was sure. and then i reached down and felt the head (ewww) and then my mom started to believe me and tried to get the doctor's attention. my response? eh. we can do this. it'll be ok (that totally came from watching that documentary).
i remember thinking this really doesn't hurt that much. i mean, yeah, it hurts. but it's not THAT bad.
and then i woke up.

purple shoes
I had another clothing dream last night. I was going to go somewhere with my parents, sister, and grandmother. Oddly, I think it was some sort of party or club--not the sort of event or place that my parents would be interested in (although the sense was that it was very innocent and kosher). I ended up picking out a white dress that was strangely reminiscent of one I had when I was 13, some purple shoes (chosen over some red ones that I actually have), and I was verifying that the grey cardigan I recently knit would look okay over the dress if it got cold. The weird thing was that, again, I was very happy with my choices and had already packed an overnight bag with things that I was sure were going to meet any unforeseen needs. I think it's weird that my subconscious is repeating these common dream themes, but with a different mood than normal. Nothing has happened in my life that I can think of that would make my subconscious less stressed or more confident than usual. I also wonder why I've been younger, skinnier, and prettier in these last few dreams.
Oh, and there were contact lenses in the dream too--the only angsty part. I took out my contacts (4 of them! - ?) and accidentally put all of them in the same side of the case. They clung together and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get them back apart.

weird
I find it weird that I've had several high-self-esteem dreams lately. Hopefully it means that 2009 will be a good year.
This one was another variation on the school/group trip thing. I was on my way to a high-school reunion, although most of the people who were going to be there were not actually people I went to high school with. The setting was really futuristic, with lots of elevated highways and fly-overs, and I think that the vehicles navigating the highways were futuristic; the whole impression was like a tame, low-speed roller coaster. There were also some interesting landscapes in the distance, like something from one of those classic science fiction novels.
Anyway, I got to the initial meeting place for the reunion. I think we were supposed to meet there, have a party/reception, and then either go on a trip (of course--what else but a group trip?) or have a several-day stay at some sort of resort. Everyone there was quite posh, but I felt perfectly at ease and happy with myself. I was wearing a too-big, excessively high-waisted linen-ish wrinkled black pencil skirt with a tucked-in white blouse. Looking back, it wasn't a good look at all, but I was quite happy about it (I also felt very skinny, whether I actually was or not). I was happily mingling and had a brief exchange (about my clothes?) with Penelope Cruz. I sat down in a corner between some people, and a rather good-looking guy (dream person, not an actual classmate) commented that it was supposed to get cold later and offered to let me borrow his pants (!ha!). I looked at them and saw that, while they were perfectly nice pants and it was nice of him to offer, the black jeans* I had brought in my bag would be a better solution seeing as he was about 8 inches taller than me. So I thanked him and that was that. I think I continued to make small talk with him and the other people in the corner.
It was weird on several levels. Anyone who knows me in real life would know that I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to a class reunion, and once there I probably wouldn't be swanning about cool as a cucumber. Another anomaly is that normally in clothes-related or packing-related dreams there's an element of desperate last-minute scrambling to create outfits out of bizarre and inappropriate clothing. Maybe my subconscious threw in the random celebrity so I wouldn't be too alarmed at the out-of-the-ordinariness.
*A pair of jeans I actually have, which is also weird because I don't normally dream about clothes I have, only very strange and incompatible dream-clothing.

down with the royalty
where in the heck this dream came from, i couldn't even begin to guess... somehow me and prince william were best buds. and the dream was about us trying to make plans to hang out. we kept playing phone tag, with him leaving messages for me and vice versa. at one point in the dream i became rather amused because i realized how cool it was that i had the number to a back line at buckingham palace. the woman's voice on the voicemail greeting even had an english accent and she said something about if you are not known by the royal family and you leave a message, you will not get a return call - that you should call the main line instead. and i felt so cool that i could leave a message and my friend, the prince, would indeed return my call.
i am ridiculous.
update: i just re-read this post and laughed. because it was quite obvious that i wrote it RIGHT after i woke up.

too much america's next top model
i was on a beach being photographed. i nailed every shot and the photographer was so impressed with me. i felt glamorous and confident and i remember thinking in my dream, i can't believe i became famous after 30. that's awesome.
i did not, however, see miss j.
