Surprise Visit

I dreamed that I was at work, but was told that my coworker C was absent and that I'd have to do her job for the day. I was taken to sit at her desk and I was really irritated that I'd have to pretend I could do her job. I looked up at the clock and noticed it was only 2:30 pm, and I was a little huffy that I'd have to spend two more hours pretending that I knew what I was doing.

Then I went downstairs to the exhibit area. Apparently there was some kind of reception going on, with people standing around holding drinks and snack foods. Suddenly, Barack Obama showed up, and I seemed to be the only one who was surprised. He was wearing a very nice suit and a really great hat, a 1940s fedora, which actually looked a little too small for him. He was making the rounds, shaking hands, but I was too shy to push forward.

State Dinner

I dreamed that I was a member of Barack Obama's staff and was attending some kind of White House event with other staffers. Most of the dream was about getting ready to go, with the usual drama of finding things, looking for things, etc.

We gathered in a group before walking to the event location. I was taller than everyone else (yes, always, even in real life), including Mr. Obama, who was surprisingly short in the dream. Everyone was wearing subdued colors, as befits a group of staff members. Lots of black, brown, etc.

I was proud of my outfit, which I felt fit the subdued color palette while remaining unique: black silky, long sleeved T shirt; brown striped knee-length skirt, brown knee socks, red sneakers (these are all clothes that I own in real life, but have never worn in combination, though I'm not afraid to wear black with brown).

Gravity and Obama

I was with my aunt in a domed white building. Apparently we were in Rome, and the building was Catholic (at some point I had a little a-ha! moment when I realized it was Roman Catholic, though I'm not sure whether the Roman or the Catholic was the revelation). The interior was completely white, and benches of some sort wrapped the entire perimeter of the building, essentially floor to ceiling. Other people were also touring the building, and when I looked up I saw that people appeared to be walking, in some sort of gravity-defying illusion, on the ceiling. This was somehow explained, in bizarre dream-logic, by the fact that although we generally think of gravity as merely "down," it of course refers to the pull of a smaller object toward a much more massive one.

I totally wanted to climb on the ceiling, so my aunt and I went out to a narrow passageway where there was a staircase with a red wooden banister. At first it was easy to climb the stairs, but then I felt a strong pull back down the stairs, like I was losing my balance and the stairs were being pulled out from under me. It was a very unpleasant, vertiginous feeling, and I realized I just didn't have the fortitude to climb on the ceiling.

So we sort of slid back down the stairs, holding on to the banister, and then went outside to continue our tour of Rome.

Later I dreamed that there was a cute little boy in a highchair, who was rocking back and forth so that if I hadn't stepped in and caught him, he would have fallen over backward. He pointed down and said "Floor!" so I undid his little safety belt so that he could play on the floor. Then I noticed that Barack Obama was giving some sort of speech in the other corner of the room. He left, and I knew that he was going to come back in the entrance right beside us. He did, and I said to the little boy, "There he is!" and he waved at us.

Barack Obama, Fashionista

I dreamed that I was alternately watching on TV and present at a meeting of Barack Obama and his advisers. They were meeting with lobbyists from disadvantaged groups in education. There were two black women, a couple of white men, an Asian woman, and a rabbi (in the dream, I was pretty sure the rabbi was a woman dressed as a man). Each group of lobbyists was arguing for its own position, which was that the government needed to pay more attention to the disadvantaged group they were representing. Obama was sitting at the center of the table looking thoughtful as they argued.

The rabbi was talking about how disadvantaged Jewish kids are and managed to imply that s/he (the rabbi) *could* be racist against African Americans (i.e. Obama himself) if s/he wanted to, but that s/he should be commended because s/he wasn't going to play that way. I was certain that Obama was sharp enough to understand the implication in the rabbi's speech, but one of the white women at the meeting felt like she had to explain it, by spelling it out and hoping to shame the rabbi for making that implication.

Obama was gracious enough to just nod his head, but I could tell he was trying to figure out a way to get all these people to work together instead of just fighting each other. At that point, the camera (or my perspective) shifted under the table, where I discovered that Obama was wearing a pair of slip-on, black and white wingtip shoes (1940s zoot suit style) with bright pink, pointed toes.

I was just feeling impressed by his fashion-forward shoes when he called a break in the meeting because he wanted to visit his family. He went to see his children and the younger one hugged him and whispered something in his ear that triggered him to think of the solution to the problem of the meeting. She whispered, "The devil's in the details." He jumped up, elated that he had figured this out, and went back to the meeting.

As part of getting these warring factions to work together, he had them all get up to dance. They formed two long lines facing each other, kind of like 18th century European dances. Some of them were willing to go along, but some of the hardbitten politicians were clearly dubious that this could work. They were dancing very stiffly, doing a lot of eye-rolling. One very tall woman in particular was making it clear that she disapproved.

the obama family p.r. tour

I dreamed that President Obama had decided to move on from town meetings to garner support and had started a goodwill campaign with his family. He was randomly selecting families to visit with refreshments and little gifts, and we were one of the first selected (I was living with various members of my family in addition to my husband).

We had been told what time they would come by, but I had put off going to the bathroom and preparing myself, and consequently had to duck in right when I heard them arriving. It took me longer than I had expected, and I was moving really slowly, to the point that the Obama daughters started to need to use the bathroom. They started knocking on the door and asking why someone was in there so long, which was quite embarassing.

When I finally came out there was a very impressive spread on the table, consisting mostly of bottles and bottles of various types of wine and champagne, with a card in front of each of them saying what they were. Most of them seemed to come from the same company and were brushed aluminum bottles* with fancy "modern" designs on them. There was also a really pretty green glass champagne bottle with art nouveau white flowers painted on it. I didn't really know what else to say, so I commented on how pretty it was. Obama picked right up like a poised social whiz and made a return comment, leaving me impressed with his social skills and unimpressed with mine. The general effect of the wine exhibit was almost as if they were presenting a brand, and I suspected that the most-represented company had had good lobbyists to get their product in the p.r. roadshow.

I was a little confused about what my role in all this was, and slightly cowed, but blown away by the collective social graces of the Obama family. They were both extremely poised and personable in their chit-chat, Mr. in a more cool, off-hand way and Mrs. in a more warm, motherly way**; and their little girls were boisterous and running around, but not in an obnoxious way. Besides being a little ill at ease, I wasn't sure what to do with my other family members. My dad, who apparently loathed Obama, had hidden himself away somewhere and was refusing to come out until they were gone. And my grandmother, who I have never heard sing in real life, was wandering around singing and ignoring everything else going on around her.

I was relieved when they left, and wondered how long they were going to keep this campaign up, because it seemed like an awful lot of work on top of their regular schedules. I thought vaguely that the idea didn't seem very well thought-out, because it had been hinted that they would be visiting every family (sort of a variation on the Chicken in Every Pot), and I suspected that someone on their team was going to realize that they hadn't calculated how long that would take.

*Yes, wine in aluminum bottles. I'm sure that works well in real life.
**Yes, my dreams hew to sex-role stereotypes. I'd like to think it's just because I've been doing a Mad Men dvd marathon.

stimulating

{I just read Blogger's notice about a scheduled outage as "scheduled outrage"!}

I dreamed last night that President Obama's stimulus plan involved him personally standing out in the street with a huge bundle of crisp new money, handing stacks of varying thicknesses to deserving individuals and organizations. He seemed quite happy about it, and I think he was checking things off on a clipboard as he went along. It didn't seem odd to me that he had no security and that people weren't mobbing him for the money. It also didn't occur to me to wonder how the recipients' worthiness was being determined. I don't remember getting a stack of bills of my own; I was just observing.

get away from my dream, brangelina!

{I'm annoyed sometimes at how many of the same boxes my dreams check. This one checked most of them (school, group trip, career-related anxiety, procrastination, celebrities, family members).}

In the beginning of the dream I was somehow in school. It was neither college nor high school, really, more or a career-related thing (Remedial Career Planning?). We were either getting ready to go on or already on a group trip (I should just omit mentioning this and let the reader assume that, unless otherwise specified, all my dreams involve group trips). We were being assigned specific projects by a teacher/adviser, and when my turn came I was delighted to be assigned to design a coloring book featuring Texas wildflowers. The adviser hinted that it was in line with my interests in art and plants, and that I was wasting my abilities and should take advantage of this project to Get Ahead in My Career. I was really looking forward to it, but stressed at the same time because I had a sinking feeling that I was just going to procrastinate forever and either do a terrible job or not do it at all.

Against that cheerful backdrop, we arrived at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's house (/compound?). It was supposedly outside New Orleans, but the scenery was very western. The house and various other buildings were in a grassy area nestled against some small hills. Behind one part of the house was a big ravine with a magnificent view of a canyon and distant hills (more on this later). I was with an undefined group, but my parents and sister were also there. My sister wanted to take pictures, more because she liked the place than because she wanted celebrity-related pictures. We were both rather upset when I realized that my camera was still broken and that I hadn't brought any other cameras.

I think we were there for a meal of some sort, but it was pretty clear that our presence was an inconvenience, and the meal didn't happen. A haggard Brad Pitt was chasing a bunch of kids around. Angelina never did make an appearance. Brad gave some of us a perfunctory tour of the place, although when we got to the actual house it was obvious that he didn't want to show us the inside, and hadn't really been planning to--it was completely chaotic.

By "actual house", I mean a small old semi-renovated house with bedrooms for all the kids. There were apparently common living and dining rooms elsewhere, possibly in the adjacent newly-constructed house where Michelle Obama's mother was staying with the Obama offspring. She was very cute, pleasant and spunky. Her bedroom looked out over the wonderful canyon/hills view, and she said, "I'm a low-wage woman, and look where I'm living! Look at what a view I have!" I wasn't sure why she and her granddaughters were living there, but everyone seemed to think it made perfect sense.

In addition to the two houses, there were several other buildings, some of them very weird. I was looking at one, a glass building filled with strange apparatuses and tube-like structures, and thinking it was really neat and had great potential when Brad wandered up, apparently having escaped all the children for a minute. He explained to me that the property had been a cleaning business (dry-cleaning, etc.), and that one of the reasons they had bought it was to take advantage of the cleaning-related buildings to modify them into something architecturally interesting. He got very excited talking about it, and seemed to shake off his haggardness for the first time.

I think there may have been some press people there then, because all the kids started posing for pictures, piling up on top of each other. They were stacked like pancakes, flat on their backs, but just before the picture could be taken the top couple of kids toppled off. Brad seemed rather stressed about having to get them all stacked up again.

Polital dreaming again

Last night I dreamed that Obama won the election. In the dream, we were staying up to watch the election returns. We anticipated being up very late, but in fact the process was very quick, and the TV shows were filling in their maps with red and blue to show who had won each state. Suddenly, the TV cameras cut to a rally somewhere full of black and white people crying and cheering because suddenly Obama had won. And suddenly I was tearing up and pretending not to.

Barack

I finally had an Obama dream! I just wish it were a little more exciting.

I was in a grocery store kitchen/food prep area; I had been trying to find someone who could open a can of soup for me. Apparently only certain people had kitchen privileges to get to the can opener, and everyone seemed busy and/or afraid to get in trouble by opening the can.

Anyway, as I was trying to find someone, I heard my name! I turned around and saw that one of the workers was a boy my sister had dated in high school, and started chatting with him. He sent his brother/cousin to open the can for me, as we continued to talk. As the brother/cousin came back with the open can, I looked over and saw Barack Obama sitting maybe 15 or 20 feet from us on a folding chair, smiling and talking to someone, apparently before making a presentation in the other room. It seemed very natural and calm; he was relaxed, and people weren't staring or mobbing him. I thought, "I am very close to Barack Obama!" but didn't feel inclined to rush up and introduce myself or anything.

obama drama

so last night was my first dream (that i can remember) about barack obama.

in the dream i was a student at a university. which university? no clue. what i was studying? no clue. all i know is that we had a guest lecture from barack. he came in really frazzled and exhausted and attempted to present but it was terrible. i remember leaning over to a classmate and commenting that he really has too much on his plate and he shouldn't have tried to give a presentation for us in the middle of campaigning. i felt bad for him and kept thinking he really needs to rest.

after class i ran into him outside where he was smoking. i then had a talk with him about self-care and how he needed to rest up and stop smoking for real or else he wouldn't be healthy enough to run a good campaign.

the end.
